Project Description
A site specific pavilion responding to the movement of the sun.
The East of Sun pavilion functions as a mechanism of light, sound, movement and action, challenging the perception of the Orient among its visitors: Is the light different between the two poles? What happens to sound as it travels from East to West? Where does the East begin and where does it end?
like the compass rose, it stretches between East and West, North and South, hovering over the terraces of the Hansen courtyard like a thin disk. On its roof, a circle opens to reveal the Jerusalem sky, while its semi-translucent walls move east and allow it to be closed to become a dwelling space, or to open up and expose the garden view.
The pavilion operates in face of the varying parts of the day. At every hour, circular sound pulses mix sounds and modes from East and West; In the continuum between sunset and sunrise, the illumination of the space ranges from natural to artificial; An imagined tea parlor invites the visitors to convene in the afternoon; and at night, the pavilion walls open and become a stage for a range of performances, from a 360-degree DJ set with east-Jerusalem rappers, to dancers that expand and contract the limit between East and West.
Tea Time Every afternoon, visitors are invited to form small groups, open awaiting DIY tea kits, and participate in an imaginative tea ceremony. Taken from East and West, age-old and invented traditions were fused together to become the tea ceremony of the pavilion. A newfound practice inviting the audience to share a common moment, bound to end with a savory cookie.
